Freshly cut it is a dull brown, and exposure to light and air turns it the purple it is named for over a matter of weeks. Handling it after that darkens it toward a deep eggplant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is also dense and hard, which makes it slow to work and well suited to a knife handle. After use, wipe the blade clean and dry. For storage, apply a thin coat of blade wax or camellia oil to the flat of the blade. Renaissance Wax is a trusted option and purpose made blade wax works equally well. Thirty seconds of maintenance after use keeps 1095 performing and looking right for years. In humid conditions without care, surface rust will develop quickly.
