A slip joint loose in a pocket shifts every time you move, turns sideways, and works its way underneath whatever else is in there. In a slip it stays flat and it stays put. The knife ends up in the same place and the same orientation every time you reach for it, which is a small thing that you notice every single day.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe knife has a home. The top of the knife sits proud of the leather so you can get a thumb and finger on it, which means the slip is not sealing the knife away from anything. The hide is finished with a heavy wax that sits in the top layer, so when you scratch or fold it the wax moves and the mark comes up lighter than the leather around it. Rub it with your thumb and it largely burnishes back.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn practice that means this slip will look carried within a month and better within a year. If you want leather that stays clean, take the Outlaw Black.
