On its own it looks like a flat panel. The pattern only appears once TRM mills the scale into a 3D contour, because the cutter steps down through the layers and exposes them as topographic lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat means the figure on this scale is a map of how deep the machine went.
