Founded in 1898, the company originally operated under the name Tidioute Cutlery Company in Pennsylvania. It wasn’t until the 1940s that KA-BAR earned legendary status, when their USMC Fighting/Utility Knife was adopted by the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

The name “KA-BAR” comes from a testimonial letter describing how a knife helped a trapper “kill a bear when his rifle jammed,” and the brand has embraced that rugged reputation ever since. Today, KA-BAR continues to manufacture knives in Olean, New York, maintaining strong ties to its American roots.
