What It Actually Does

The flat profile is the point. A slip joint loose in a pocket shifts every time you move, turns sideways, and works its way underneath whatever else is in there. In a slip it stays flat and it stays put. The knife ends up in the same place and the same orientation every time you reach for it, which is a small thing that you notice every single day.

The knife has a home. That is most of what you are buying.

And What It Does Not Do

Worth being straight about this. The top of the knife sits proud of the leather so you can get a thumb and finger on it, which means the slip is not sealing the knife away from anything. Your phone can still find that exposed end.

It also makes a slow knife slower. A slip joint already takes two hands and a moment to open compared to a locking folder, and adding a step does not help.

So Why Carry One

Because anybody who owns a slip joint already knew both of those things before they bought one. A slip joint was never the knife you grab in a hurry, and that has never been the point of owning one.

There is something that feels right about a slip joint living in a leather slip, the same way there is about a pocket watch on a chain. It is the old world version of carrying a knife, and Crazy Horse leather leans all the way into it.

What Crazy Horse Leather Is

Crazy Horse is a tannage rather than a color. The hide is finished with a heavy wax that sits in the top layer, so when you scratch or fold it the wax moves and the mark comes up lighter than the leather around it. Rub it with your thumb and it largely burnishes back.

In practice that means this slip will look carried within a month and better within a year. If you want leather that stays clean, take the Outlaw Black. If you want leather that keeps a record of the fact you carried the knife, this is the one.

Badger Claw Outfitters has been working leather in Adkins, Texas since 2011, about four hours south of our shop. Their stamp is pressed into the face of every slip. Leather is one of the categories where a small American shop still beats a factory, because a slip that fits right has to be cut and sewn to a pattern somebody actually tested.
