Fixed Blade of the Year

Blade Show Atlanta named the Ridge Runner the 2024 American-Made Fixed Blade of the Year. That award goes to one knife a year out of everything shown, and it went to a hunting knife from a shop where the man who designed it is a former Marine and a lifelong hunter who started making knives in 2008.

The Grind Is Why It Cuts

McNees runs a high, thin flat grind on quarter inch under stock, and at 0.125 inches the blade is thin to start with. A tall flat grind on thin stock is the geometry that actually slices, which is not what most hunting knives give you. Plenty of them are ground thick and heavy because that feels sturdy in a display case, and then they push through hide instead of cutting it.

MagnaCut at 63-64 HRC

MagnaCut is the steel to have on a knife that gets used wet and dirty. Edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance at the same time, with no tradeoff among the three. McNees runs it hard at 63 to 64 HRC, so you get a long stretch between sharpenings on a blade already ground thin.

Handles You Can Change

The scales are contoured to avoid hot spots under hard use, and they come off in minutes. If you want a different color or material later, McNees sells the scales separately. That is not a common thing on a production fixed blade.

Carry

The Kydex sheath has a Tek-Lok on it, so you set the ride height and the cant where you want them rather than living with whatever position the maker chose. It carries strong side, cross draw, or scout depending on how you mount it.
