The Guppy 3.5

The Guppy is Nick's flagship folder. The name is a nod to McGee's Piranha, which is the knife that got him thinking about folders in the first place, and Nick has said he did not think his knife was worthy of the bigger fish. It has been his signature model for years now. The one he carries himself is a Guppy 3.5.

MagnaCut Under DLC

MagnaCut is the steel most makers land on when they want edge retention and corrosion resistance without picking one over the other. Putting a DLC coating over it adds a hard, low friction surface that resists scratching and cuts glare. On this knife the DLC runs across the blade, the titanium lock side, and the hardware, so the whole thing reads as one dark piece except for the blue in the weave.

Black and Blue Weave Carbon Fiber

The show side is a black and blue weave carbon fiber, skeletonized so you see through to the frame. Against a completely blacked out knife the blue is the only color on it, and it moves as you turn it in the light. The skeletonizing on both sides also takes weight out of a knife this size.

The Details Underneath

Nick runs Skiff bearings with washers inside to keep the bearings off the titanium, which is the kind of thing you only do if you are thinking about the knife ten years from now. The pocket clip is milled rather than bent.

Nick works out of a purpose built room off his garage in Wilmington, North Carolina, with two Wilmont grinders, a heat treat oven, and a surface platen made in Texas. He came to knives from a decade of professional cooking, and he is best known for putting stories inside handles, including wood from the USS North Carolina docked two miles from his house.

Why This One Stands Out

This is a one off. A fully blacked out Guppy 3.5 where the only color is the blue running through the carbon weave, dated the day it was finished. Nick does not make two of these.
