A Mike Irie mirror polished blade on knurled sapphire blue steel.

The Avalon is a Peace Neighbor design. This is the custom shop thumb stud version, with a 17-4 heat treated steel handle knurled and finished in sapphire blue PVD, carrying a Mike Irie compound ground, mirror polished 154CM blade.

Note from Lone Star Knife and Supply: This was the highest priced thing we bought at the show. A compound grind finished to mirror by hand is the kind of work you normally only see on a one off custom, not on something you can buy off a dealer sheet.

The Mike Irie Grind

Mike Irie grinds blades for Pro-Tech's custom work, and a compound grind is the reason to care. Instead of one flat bevel from spine to edge, a compound grind puts two angles on the blade, so it can be thin where it cuts and thick where it needs support.

Finishing that to a mirror is the hard part. A mirror polish shows every flaw underneath it, which means the grind has to be right before the polishing starts.

Knurled Steel, Not Aluminum

The handle is 17-4 heat treated steel rather than the aluminum most Pro-Techs use. It is heavier and it holds the knurling crisply, and the sapphire blue PVD over it is what makes this knife look like nothing else in a case.

40 Produced

Pro-Tech made forty of these for the California Custom Knife Show. Custom shop runs do not come back.
