The Raven is Dean Shroka's compact karambit style fixed blade, made by hand in Alabama and serialized. This is serial 001, with a Missing Piece copper resin handle and a black chrome Gunkote finish over 440C stainless. It ships in a Kydex sheath set up for belt carry.
The Raven is the smallest thing Dean makes and the most aggressive. Karambit style, with a 2.5 inch main edge and a 1.6 inch sharpened top edge, on a 2.2 inch handle. At roughly 5 inches overall it is a knife you carry rather than one you use for chores.
These are hand made, so the numbers run close rather than exact. Dean grinds, finishes, and serializes each one himself, which is why no two come out identical and why every one has its own dog tag.
Dean plate quenches his blades and then runs them through cryo in liquid nitrogen, which is not something most makers at his size bother with. It converts more of the retained austenite and gets the steel closer to what the heat treat is actually capable of. On 440C that means better edge holding out of a stainless that people usually write off.
The handle is a Missing Piece copper resin, which suspends copper through a cast resin so the metal catches light from inside the material rather than sitting on the surface. Against a black chrome blade it is the highest contrast build in this group.
Dean works out of a garage shop in Alabama, which he and his wife converted from the shed most of his videos were filmed in. He is one of the makers we visited on the Great American Knife Tour.
Serial 001 of the Raven. First of the model, with the most distinctive handle material of the five we brought back.
