The Raven
The Raven is the smallest thing Dean makes and the most aggressive. Karambit style, with a 2.5 inch main edge and a 1.6 inch sharpened top edge, on a 2.2 inch handle. At roughly 5 inches overall it is a knife you carry rather than one you use for chores.
Made One at a Time
These are hand made, so the numbers run close rather than exact. Dean grinds, finishes, and serializes each one himself, which is why no two come out identical and why every one has its own dog tag.
440C, Plate Quenched and Cryo Treated
Dean plate quenches his blades and then runs them through cryo in liquid nitrogen, which is not something most makers at his size bother with. It converts more of the retained austenite and gets the steel closer to what the heat treat is actually capable of. On 440C that means better edge holding out of a stainless that people usually write off.
Wenge and Pale Gold
Wenge is a dense African hardwood, nearly black with an open grain that shows as fine light streaks. Under a pale gold blade it is the dressiest build of the five, and the one that reads as a piece somebody chose rather than a tool that came out of a box.
About Severed Metal Works
Dean works out of a garage shop in Alabama, which he and his wife converted from the shed most of his videos were filmed in. He is one of the makers we visited on the Great American Knife Tour.
Why This One Stands Out
Pale gold is a finish we have not seen from Dean before, and wenge is the hardest of the handle woods he works with. One only.
