Made One at a Time
These are hand made, so the numbers run close rather than exact. The Squire has held the same footprint across generations, roughly a 3.3 inch blade at about 7.5 inches overall, with a finger ring at the base of the handle for grip and quick deployment. Dean grinds, finishes, and serializes each one himself, which is why every knife carries its own dog tag.
Version 3
The Squire is the knife Dean is known for, and this is the third generation of it. The V3 moves the line onto stainless steels, which is a bigger change than it sounds. Every Squire before this ran high carbon, a steel that patinas and needs looking after. This one does not.
440C, Plate Quenched and Cryo Treated
Dean plate quenches his blades and then runs them through cryo in liquid nitrogen. It converts more of the retained austenite and gets the steel closer to what the heat treat is actually capable of. On 440C that means better edge holding out of a stainless that people usually write off, and it is not something most makers his size bother with.
Dymalux and Midnight Blue
Dymalux is laminated hardwood run through with resin under pressure, so it handles like wood and holds up like a synthetic. It takes color all the way through rather than on the surface. Paired with a midnight blue blade this is the only Squire in the batch with color on both ends of it.
About Severed Metal Works
Dean works out of a garage shop in Alabama, which he and his wife converted from the shed most of his videos were filmed in. He is one of the makers we visited on the Great American Knife Tour. Every Severed Metal Works knife carries Lifetime Blacksmith Benefits, covering free repairs and lifetime sharpening, with the customer covering shipping both ways.
Why This One Stands Out
Midnight blue is the only blue Gunkote in this group. Serial 012, one only.
