Made One at a Time
These are hand made, so the numbers run close rather than exact. The Squire has held the same footprint across generations, roughly a 3.3 inch blade at about 7.5 inches overall, with a finger ring at the base of the handle for grip and quick deployment. Dean grinds, finishes, and serializes each one himself, which is why every knife carries its own dog tag.
Version 3
The Squire is the knife Dean is known for, and this is the third generation of it. When we visited his shop he told us the V3 was coming and that it would be in MagnaCut. He had the heat treat oven already. What he needed was the dewar, a very large thermos for liquid nitrogen, because MagnaCut wants cryo to reach what it is capable of. He bought it. This is the result.
MagnaCut, Plate Quenched and Cryo Treated
Dean plate quenches and then runs the blade straight into cryo in liquid nitrogen at negative 300 degrees. That is the process MagnaCut is designed around and it is not something most makers his size take on. MagnaCut itself gives you edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance without trading one for the others.
Cocobolo
Cocobolo is a dense rosewood that runs orange and red through dark streaking, and it has enough natural oil that it polishes up without much help. It is a wood that keeps changing for years, deepening as it sees light. Dean has used it before on the Phantom Pain, and it suits a silver blade.
About Severed Metal Works
Dean works out of a garage shop in Alabama, which he and his wife converted from the shed most of his videos were filmed in. He is one of the makers we visited on the Great American Knife Tour. Every Severed Metal Works knife carries Lifetime Blacksmith Benefits, covering free repairs and lifetime sharpening, with the customer covering shipping both ways.
Why This One Stands Out
The warmest looking of the three MagnaCut Squires, and the only cocobolo. Serial 010, one only.
