Back Door Entry. A Discontinued Microtech Collector Piece From 2004, Complete With The Full Package.

This is a Microtech CMTX5 dual action automatic, serial 0617, in carbon fiber with a blasted S30V blade. It comes complete with the box, the instructions, and the sheath.

The CMTX5 ran in 2004 and has not been made since. It is a liner lock folder that opens two ways. You can push the ambidextrous thumb studs like any manual knife, or you can press the pocket clip and it fires open on its own. The clip trigger is a Butch Vallotton design, and it is the reason nobody looking at this knife would guess it is an automatic until it goes off in their hand.

That hidden release is the whole point of the model and the reason collectors still chase it. Microtech has made a great many automatics over thirty years. They have made very few where the trigger is the pocket clip, and they have not brought the mechanism back.

Carbon Fiber and Blasted S30V

The CMTX5 came in a few handle materials and carbon fiber is the one that suits the knife best. It keeps a 3.5 inch folder at four ounces, and against a blasted blade there is nothing bright anywhere on it. S30V was the top stainless of the era and it still sharpens and holds an edge like a knife you would carry today.

Complete In The Box

This one is not just the knife. Box, instructions, and sheath all came with it, which on a twenty year old discontinued model is most of what separates a collector piece from a used knife. Finding a CMTX5 at all takes patience. Finding one with the full package takes longer.

A Note On The Action

Worth knowing on any CMTX5 you look at. Owners of this model have reported over the years that the sear does not always hold the blade fully closed, and Microtech no longer services the automatic function on the CMTX5. That history is part of the model rather than specific to this example. The manual thumb stud opening works independently of the auto mechanism either way. If you have questions about this particular knife before you buy, reach out and we will answer them.
