Why These Go Together
A slip joint loose in a pocket shifts every time you move, turns sideways, and works its way under whatever else is in there. In a slip it stays flat and it stays put, so the knife is in the same place and the same orientation every time you reach for it.
The knife has a home. On a two and a quarter inch traditional, that is most of what you are buying.
45 Degree Milling
Angled cuts across the titanium that give you a directional texture, subtle from across a room and obvious the moment it is in your hand. The angle catches light differently than flat titanium does, so the scales shift as you turn the knife.
This is the pattern that gives you real grip without looking like it is trying to.
The Slip Joint
Michael Martin machines every component in house at his shop in Weaverville, North Carolina, including the titanium scales, the MagnaCut Wharncliffe blade, and the backspring. Everything but screws and bearings.
At 2.2 ounces it is one of the lightest MagnaCut knives you can buy, and because it does not lock it is legal in places where a locking folder is not.
What Crazy Horse Leather Is
Crazy Horse is a tannage rather than a color. The hide is finished with a heavy wax that sits in the top layer, so when you scratch or fold it the wax moves and the mark comes up lighter than the leather around it. Rub it with a thumb and it largely burnishes back.
That means the slip will look carried within a month and better within a year. It keeps a record of the fact that you used the knife, which is the right behavior for leather riding against a stonewashed blade that does the same thing.
Two Shops, Four Hours Apart From Us
The knife is made in Weaverville, North Carolina. The leather is cut and stitched in Adkins, Texas, about four hours south of us, by a shop that has been working leather since 2011. Their stamp is pressed into the face of every slip.
