What the Eyelets Change

The standard slip is pocket only. It goes in loose and it rides wherever your pocket puts it. That works, and for a lot of people it is the whole appeal.

These eyelets give you a second option. Run a clip through them, something like an Ulticlip, and the slip anchors to the top of your pocket instead of floating in the bottom of it. Same knife, same leather, but now it is in the same spot every time and it comes out with the slip rather than leaving the slip behind.

The Other Thing They Do

The ABW Slip Joint has no lanyard hole. The knife is a small milled titanium slip joint and there is nowhere on it to tie anything.

The eyelets solve that from the outside. Tie a lanyard to the slip and you get a pull that sits above the pocket line, which on a two hand knife buried in a front pocket is the difference between fishing for it and just pulling.

It is a workaround for something the knife does not have, and it works better than it has any right to.

What It Actually Does

The flat profile is the point. A slip joint loose in a pocket shifts every time you move, turns sideways, and works its way underneath whatever else is in there. In a slip it stays flat and it stays put. The knife ends up in the same place and the same orientation every time you reach for it, which is a small thing that you notice every single day.

The knife has a home. That is most of what you are buying.

And What It Does Not Do

Worth being straight about this. The top of the knife sits proud of the leather so you can get a thumb and finger on it, which means the slip is not sealing the knife away from anything. Your phone can still find that exposed end.

It also makes a slow knife slower. A slip joint already takes two hands and a moment to open compared to a locking folder, and adding a step does not help. Anybody who owns a slip joint already knew that before they bought one.

What Crazy Horse Leather Is

Crazy Horse is a tannage rather than a color. The hide is finished with a heavy wax that sits in the top layer, so when you scratch or fold it the wax moves and the mark comes up lighter than the leather around it. Rub it with your thumb and it largely burnishes back.

In practice that means this slip will look carried within a month and better within a year. If you want leather that stays clean, take the Outlaw Black. If you want leather that keeps a record of the fact you carried the knife, this is the one.

Made in Texas

Badger Claw Outfitters has been working leather in Adkins, Texas since 2011, about four hours south of our shop. Their stamp is pressed into the face of every slip. Leather is one of the categories where a small American shop still beats a factory, because a slip that fits right has to be cut and sewn to a pattern somebody actually tested.

Also Available Without Eyelets

If you carry loose in a pocket and have no use for a clip or a lanyard, the plain version is the same leather and the same pattern without the hardware.

Why You'll Want It

Good Texas leather that ages into something of its own, on the kind of knife that deserves it, with a way to clip it or tie to it that the knife itself does not give you.
